Rumours of a new, slim PlayStation 3 have swirled for months, but reports from the Far East, where the majority of PlayStation components are manufactured, suggests that suppliers are ramping up production of some key parts.
According to the DigiTimes, Sony has ordered enough parts to make one million consoles in the third quarter of this year, twice as many as in the last three months.
The new console, dubbed the PS3 Slim, is expected to cost less than the current generation of PlayStation 3 consoles, which start at around £300 for the 40GB version. The Slim is likely to come in two models, one with a 40GB hard drive, another with an 80GB hard drive, with prices expected to start at around £260.
A listing for a “PlayStation 3 Konsole Slim” appeared on Amazon’s German website over the weekend, but the web page was quickly removed by the online retailer. However, the veracity of the listing, which is still available as a cached page, has been called in to question. It features a fan-produced image of what the PS3 Slim might look like, rather than an official photo.
At the E3 games expo in Los Angeles earlier this year, Sony launched a new version of its PlayStation Portable hand-held games console, the PSP Go!, but did not refer to a possible new PlayStation model.
The Japanese electronics giant has sold almost 24 million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide since the device first went on sale in November 2006. Sony said it did not comment on rumour and speculation.
